Marco Antonio Rubio was born May 28, 1971, in Miami, Florida. His parents were Cubans who immigrated to the United States in 1956. His parents were not U.S. citizens at the time of Marco's birth, they were naturalized in 1975.

Mr. Rubio is an American politician, lawyer, and diplomat serving since 2025 as the 72nd United States secretary of state. A member of the Republican Party, Rubio is also serving as acting national security advisor.

In his first trip abroad as secretary of state, Rubio traveled to PanamaGuatemalaEl SalvadorCosta Rica, and the Dominican Republic. The trip was intended to address curtailing illegal migration.

He met with El Salvador president Nayib Bukele and reached an agreement for the country to take in deported foreign nationals, jailed U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Rubio praised the agreement as a way of rehousing deportees and American prisoners.

On Aug. 6, 2025, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression sued Secretary of State Marco Rubio, challenging two federal immigration law provisions that give him unchecked power to revoke legal immigrants’ visas and deport them.

“Free speech isn’t a privilege the government hands out. Under our Constitution it is the inalienable right of every man, woman, and child,” said FIRE attorney. Noncitizens in the United States have First Amendment rights.
