Book by Edward James Olmos, Lea YbarraManuel Monterrey

Little, Brown, 1999 - Photography - 176 pages

This spirited photo book was part of an unprecedented campaign. It included, the HBO documentary and a Smithsonian traveling photography exhibit highlighting the vital contributions of Latinos in all aspects of American culture.

More than thirty award-winning photographers fanned out across the country to capture life on neighborhood playgrounds, the streets of New York, and the banks of the Rio Grande. At the flamenco bars, at work, and in the churches.

Thousands of miles and thousands of photographs later, the result is an exciting panoramic vision of the United States today - a place where Latinos live a broad range of lifestyles and contribute to American society in exciting ways.

Edward James Olmos was born and raised in East Los AngelesCalifornia. His father was a Mexican immigrant who moved to California in 1945 and his mother was an American of Mexican descent.
