Immigrating to the USA is a double-edged blade. They suffer abuse from the population, but they get to send money back home. Immigrants, including those who remit, contribute significantly to the US economy through their labor and consumption of goods and services.

Remittance is more than three times as large as the total global foreign aid. An estimated $685 billion in 2024. A substantial share of remittance ends up in the hands of banks and money-transfer companies, due to fees imposed on money transfers.

Remittances to Mexico reached $68 billion in 2024. Many countries with large overseas populations have become reliant on remittances. For example, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, remittance payments from the U.S. are equivalent to approximately 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
