Have you ever wondered why people think that the only Americans come from the USA. I blame Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, and Martin Waldseemüller. Columbus, because he thought he was in East Asia, and Vespucci for correcting him. But Waldseemüller the map maker did the worst, by coining the term America and putting it on a Map.
America is inscribed on the Paris Green Globe 1506, attributed to Waldseemüller. The single name inscribed on the northern and southern parts of the New World, the continent also bears the inscription: America ab inuentore nuncupata (America, named after its discoverer).
The United States Declaration of Independence of 1776 refers to "the thirteen United States of America", making the first formal use of the country’s name, which was officially adopted in 1777 by the nation's first governing constitution, the Articles of Confederation.
The usage spread through other English-speaking countries and now, the unqualified noun American, refers to natives or citizens of the United States, though other senses are specified with a qualifier such as Latin American or North American.
